Paul Fendley 1952 - 1972 It was all about Winning! takes you back to 1972 where a young man was passionate about the game of hockey. Paul Fendley grew up playing shinny on the Credit River in Norval, Ontario. Paul was drafted by the Peterborough Petes Jr. A hockey team. He went on to play for the Guelph CMC’s and sadly was unable to fulfill his dream. The game of hockey is one of the greatest games on earth, and it involves a lot of great people, doing a lot of great things for the game. You develop many life skills including; sportsmanship, accountability, self-discipline, work ethic, and team work. Hockey is also about playing with a little grit and determination. It is about "finishing the check” without any “intent to injure”. The stakes increase when competing for a League or a National Championship. When an undisciplined team is encountered, the game changes. The talent and sportsmanship may be sacrificed for the chance of victory. This is the tragic side of hockey — physical injuries and concussions. Some of this behaviour continues in hockey today. For decades people have walked by the photograph that hangs on the wall in Guelph’s arena. The price of victory was too high. 50th Anniversary.
I encourage players, parents, grandparents, coaches, managers and fans, to read this story and learn from history.
