Oliver Huckel greatly admired Richard Wagner. From 1903 through about 1914, Mr Huckel “retold” 11 of Wagner’s operas, “freely translated in poetic narrative form.” Thomas Y Crowell & Co published them in handy octavo volumes, each with a foreword and a few fine engravings. In all there were 4 cover designs, (1) an embossed red cloth with gilt printing, (2) a plain red cloth with more ornate gilt printing and a highlighted capital, (3) a green, blue or gray cloth, suitably illustrated, with the more ornate gilt printing and highlighted capital, and (4) a soft, dark green leather with gilt on the spine and Wagner’s signature gilt on the front. Mr Huckel also wrote, and Crowell published, a volume about Richard Wagner himself, including material from Wagner’s own autobiography. All these volumes are more or less 100 pages after the preliminary pages. I do not know that Crowell used all 4 binding designs on each of the 12 books.
