DOES RIVENDELL BOOKS PURCHASE BOOKS? Yes, we do!  See our guidelines below to assist you in navigating our Store Credit and Cash purchasing options.

NO APPOINTMENT REQUIRED- Less than 10 books for store credit, or books previously purchased from Rivendell Books
SMALL STORE CREDIT APPOINTMENT- Between 10 and 40 books for Store Credit ONLY
LARGE STORE CREDIT APPOINTMENT- Between 40 and 100 books for Store Credit ONLY
SMALL STORE CASH APPOINTMENT- Between 10 and 40 books for Cash
LARGE STORE CASH APPOINTMENT- Between 40 and 100 books for Cash
*Store Credit is paid at double the Cash rate

For rare, antiquarian, collectible, or otherwise valuable books, please book a Rare and Antiquated Book Appointment.

We ask that you bring your books in boxes or sturdy bags, so we are able to easily move them if required.

NOTE We do not take the following:

  • Harlequin Romance novels
  • Encyclopedias
  • Condensed Readers Digest
  • Textbooks
  • Magazines
  • Computer Books
  • Chicken Soup Books

Please ensure books do not smell musty or have any indication of water damage, stains or mould. Hardcover books should have the dust cover attached if originally issued. Covers should not be ripped or torn, and the spines should be intact, with no cracks.

CAN I USE STORE CREDIT TO PAY FOR MY BOOKS? Yes, store credit can be used to pay for any book in the store. 

NEW May 1, 2026:

We truly appreciate your continued support and love of books! To help us maintain a sustainable business while continuing to offer generous trade-in credit for the books you bring in, we are making a small adjustment to how store credit can be used.

  • You may apply Store Credit toward a maximum of 50% of any single transaction total.
  • The remaining balance must be paid using cash, credit/debit card, or other accepted payment methods.

What remains unchanged:

  • You will continue to receive the same generous store credit amounts when you bring in books for trade.
  • All existing and future store credit will remain on your account indefinitely — your credit will not expire.

This change will allow us to keep offering fair trade values and keep the bookstore thriving for years to come. Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support. We’re grateful to have such wonderful customers and look forward to seeing you soon!
