Can children be taught to think - not think "about" things, but to think as a specific skill? And if they can, does it really do them any good?
Most schools equate thinking with logic: if it is articulate and error-free argument, it is good "thinking". But in normal circumstances, it is more useful to see every possible facet of a problem than to argue in a sophisticated manner from one of them.
Edward de Bono has done more than any other man to bring the concept of thinking into the real world. Now he has devised a programme for the teaching of thinking within the framework of the school timetable, and it is already being used by about two million children of all ages and abilities. It is set out here.
