Ovide Mercredi, Grand Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, wrote this book after the failed October 1992 referendum on the Charlottetown Accords. Mercredi had played an important role in negotiating those accords. Mary Ellen Turpel, a lawyer and advocate for Indigenous peoples in Canada, provides valuable context and framing material for Mercredi’s manifesto. Together, they explain First Nation grievances in a way that is accessible to non-Indigenous Canadians. They also make a case to other First Nation people about how to move forward after Charlottetown.
