Some years ago, R.D. Lawrence built a cabin in the Ontario forest and became owner of a kind of private sanctuary not so much by an investment of money as by an investment of love and patience. His "Place" was the home of black bears, beavers and racoons; of skunks, hawks and singing mice, and he began to write about and photograph the world within one small corner of wilderness. He made friends as well, first with a small but courageous hare and eventually with many forest animals, and his impressions have been woven into a warm, witty account of change and survival in the natural world.
