"In Atlantic Canada, the name 'Alexander Keith' is synonymous with beer, specifically, the very popular 'Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale'.

Alexander Keith was, indeed, a great brewmaster. But, he was also a great community leader, a great friend and a devoted family man. Keith came to Nova Scotia from his native Scotland shortly after the Napoleonic Wars. it was a time of excitement, growth and change in Halifax. Keith soon found a job as brewmaster with a local firm. Before long, he bought the brewery on the Halifax waterfront--on a site that remains the home of Canada's oldest working brewery.

Keith became a leader in the business community, in public life and in philanthropic and fraternal organizations. He was twice Mayor of Halifax, served for many years in Nova Scotia's Legislative Council (six years as President), and was a leader in the Masonic Order, the North British Society and the Highland Society of Nova Scotia.

Told for the first time, this is the story of Alexander Keith, his times and his legacy to Nova Scotia and Canada."
