This book is a celebration of New Brunswick's wooden covered bridges. It provides the reader with an insight into the history, construction, and location of the beautiful structures in our province.
The era of the covered bridge in New Brunswick began around the time of Confederation. During the 80 year period in which they were built, the original design only underwent a few modifications. The fact that some covered bridges have stood the test of over 100 years of Maritime weather is a tribute to their construction.
Sadly since the mid 1970s, more than 45 bridges have been lost. This book hopes to draw attention to these unique examples of the workmanship of our forefathers. Covered bridges are an important part of our history and heritage and we need to preserve the 64 that remain standing. The rapid disappearance of these structures must be halted.
