Martha Griffith Browne, a Southern slave-owner who became wedded to the cause of emancipation, wrote this ‘autobiography†of Ann, a woman born into slavery, to raise the money to liberate those she had inherited from her father. Published in 1856, it was written in the style of contemporary narratives, and although a fiction, draws on Browneâ€s own experience to describe the horrors of slavery.
