A treatise of 1887 dismissed hand grenades as relics; mortars, too, received small praise. Yet both were to be resurrected with devastating effect. Within thirty years more hand grenades would be hurled in one week than in the whole history prior to 1887, and few weapons became so feared and hated by their victims as mortars.
