More than twenty-five years' experience with the Scribner Handbook of English has demonstrated the soundness of its fundamental approach, namely that there is no workable substitute for an objective presentation of the facts of the lan-guage. The present edition maintains this basic philosophy.
Throughout this period it has been a source of satisfaction to the authors to see how often their conclusions relative to specific usages and their general approach to the treatment of certain language problems have appeared elsewhere.
The present edition retains the same organization as the pre-ceding, keeping separate those portions devoted to the stimulation of self-expression and those calculated to aid the student in adhering to standards of acceptability in writing. A complete student paper has been included as an example of writing done from an outline and employing correct documentation.
